Insurance should always be a consideration when travelling. It protects against the worst of the consequences if you are forced to cancel, experience travel delays, or have an accident that requires expensive medical treatment.

While the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC, from the Post Office in the UK) provides considerable health cover within the European Union, it does not pay for repatriation by air ambulance, nor for a family member to travel to be with you in hospital, even if recommended by medical staff. Nor does it necessarily provide cover in non EU countries.

Most cheap flights, too, are completely unrefundable once paid for, so if you have to change or cancel flights, you can end up seriously out of pocket.
